5 Steps How to Start Evening Prayer and Find Rest (Easy Guide for New Believers)

Starting a new journey in faith is one of the most exciting things you’ll ever do. If you’ve recently decided to follow Jesus or are exploring what it means to be a Christian, welcome to the family! At 1Love Christian Church, we know that those first steps can feel a little overwhelming. Between learning the stories of the Bible and finding your place in a local church, you’re also probably looking for ways to connect with God in your daily life.

One of the most powerful habits you can build as a new believer is evening prayer. It’s more than just a "religious chore", it’s a way to find actual, deep rest for your soul after a long day. In a busy city like Boise, where we’re often rushing from work to the foothills and back again, carving out ten minutes for God can change everything.

Here is a simple, five-step guide on how to start an evening prayer routine that will help you find peace and strengthen your walk with Christ.

1. Create a Quiet Space and Just Be Still

The first step isn't actually about talking; it's about listening. Most of our days are filled with noise, podcasts, traffic, or the hum of the office. To connect with God, you need to find a "closet" or a quiet corner where you can turn down the volume of the world.

Find a spot in your home that feels peaceful. It might be your favorite armchair, a spot on your porch, or even just sitting at the edge of your bed. Turn off your phone (really, put it in another room if you can!). Take a few deep breaths and realize that God is right there with you. You don't have to use fancy words. You can simply say, "God, I’m here, and I want to spend a few minutes with You."

As a new believers church Boise residents can rely on, we often remind our community that prayer is a conversation, not a performance. You aren't being graded on how poetic you sound. God just wants your heart.

2. Look Back with Gratitude

It is hard to feel restless when your heart is full of thanks. After you’ve settled into your quiet space, take two minutes to look back over your day. What were the "small wins"? Maybe it was a kind word from a coworker, a beautiful view of the sunset over the Boise River, or simply having enough gas in the tank to get home.

Mention these specific things to God. "Thank You, Lord, for that conversation with my neighbor," or "Thank You for helping me stay calm when I was stressed at work." When we practice gratitude, we shift our focus from what we lack to what God has provided. This is a foundational part of Christian discipleship Boise believers use to stay grounded in their faith.

3. Confess and Let Go

We all mess up. As a new believer, you might feel a lot of pressure to be perfect, but at 1Love Christian Church, we believe in "Grace Over Perfection." Part of finding rest is realizing you don’t have to carry the weight of your mistakes into tomorrow.

Think about your day. Was there a moment you were impatient? Did you hold onto a grudge? Did you act out of selfishness? Just tell God about it. This is what we call confession. You might say, "Lord, I’m sorry for how I spoke to my spouse tonight. Please forgive me and help me do better."

The amazing thing about the Gospel is that when we ask for forgiveness, God gives it freely. He doesn't hold it over our heads. Once you’ve confessed, imagine yourself literally handing that mistake over to Him. You don't have to worry about it anymore. You can learn more about our foundational beliefs on our Beliefs page.

4. Pray for Your Needs and Others

Now that your heart is clear, it’s time to bring your requests to God. This includes your own needs, like wisdom for a big decision or strength to get through a tough week, and the needs of those around you.

Many men in our community find great strength through our Man Up Men’s Ministry, where we learn to pray for our families, our city, and each other. Whether you are a man or a woman, praying for others pulls you out of your own worries and reminds you that you are part of a larger community.

If you have friends who are also looking for a new believers church Boise, pray for them! Pray for your neighbors, your local leaders, and our church family. Then, tell God what's weighing on your own mind. If you’re anxious about tomorrow, tell Him. "Lord, I’m worried about that meeting. Please give me peace."

5. Read a Verse and End in Stillness

Before you close your eyes, read a small passage of Scripture. You don’t need to read a whole chapter; even just one or two verses can provide the "rest" your mind needs. The Psalms are a great place to start for evening prayer. Psalm 4:8 is a classic: "In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety."

Let that truth sink in. You aren't safe because you’re smart or lucky; you’re safe because God is watching over you. If you want to dive deeper into the Word, we highly recommend joining our Bible Study sessions. We have a wonderful in-depth study led by Dale Cornett that is perfect for those who want to grow in their understanding of the Bible.

Growing Together: Baptism and Discipleship

Starting an evening prayer habit is a huge step in Christian discipleship Boise. But faith isn't meant to be lived out alone. We are a small, tight-knit community of about 50 to 70 people who truly care for one another. If you haven't yet taken the step of baptism, we would love to talk to you about it. Baptism in Boise is a beautiful public declaration of your new life in Christ, and it’s something we celebrate deeply here at 1Love Christian Church.
