Whether you’ve been following Jesus for decades or you’re just starting to get curious about faith, learning how to study the Bible for yourself is the single best way to grow. You don't need a degree in theology or a background in Greek and Hebrew. You just need a willing heart and a simple plan.
As a Bible teaching church in Boise, we want to help you move from just "reading" to truly "hearing" what God has for you. Here is an easy, five-step guide to help you dive deep into the Word and grow closer to Him.
Step 1: Find Your Spot and Pick a Plan
In a busy city like Boise, finding a moment of peace can be a challenge. Between hiking the foothills, hitting the Saturday market, or just keeping up with the kids, our schedules fill up fast. The first step to a consistent Bible study habit is being intentional about your space.
Find a spot where you feel comfortable. It could be your favorite armchair with a view of the mountains, a quiet corner in a local coffee shop on State Street, or even a bench at Julia Davis Park. The goal is to create a "sacred space", a place your brain associates with connecting with God.
Once you have your spot, you need a plan. Reading the Bible cover-to-cover starting at Genesis is great, but many people get stuck once they hit the detailed laws in Leviticus. If you’re new to this, we recommend starting with the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John). Seeing the life of Jesus through the eyes of those who walked with Him is the perfect foundation for everything else.
Step 2: Start with a Simple Prayer
Before you read a single word, take thirty seconds to talk to the Author. You aren't just reading a textbook; you’re engaging in a conversation.
A simple prayer could be: "Lord, I’m here. Open my heart to what You want to say today. Help me understand Your Word and show me how to live it out."
When we pray before studying, we’re acknowledging that we need the Holy Spirit’s help to truly understand spiritual truths. It shifts our mindset from "checking a box" to "seeking a Person." If you ever find yourself stuck or confused by a passage, don't sweat it. Just pause, pray again, and ask for clarity. Step 3: Dive in with the SOAP Method
This is where the rubber meets the road. At our Bible Study & Discipleship meetings, we often use the SOAP method. It’s a simple, four-part framework that helps you process what you’re reading.
- S – Scripture: Read a short passage (maybe 5–10 verses) and write down one verse that really jumps out at you. Physically writing the words helps them sink into your memory.
- O – Observation: What is happening in this text? Who is talking? Is there a command to follow, a promise to claim, or a warning to heed? Write down two or three things you notice about the passage.
- A – Application: This is the "So what?" part. How does this verse apply to your life today? Does it change how you treat your coworkers? Does it give you peace about a financial worry? Be specific.
- P – Prayer: Write out a short prayer based on what you just learned. Ask God for the strength to apply it.
Using the SOAP method turns your reading into a transformational experience. It moves the truth from your head to your heart.
Step 4: Making it Real in the Treasure Valley
Bible study shouldn't stay in your notebook. The goal is to let it change how you live right here in our community. If you read about God’s heart for the broken, maybe that's a nudge to look into our Outreach & Evangelism programs. If you read about the importance of family, perhaps it’s time to lean more into our Kids Ministry.
Application is what turns a "churchgoer" into a "disciple." In the Treasure Valley, we have so many opportunities to show the love of Jesus. Whether it's through simple acts of kindness to your neighbors or joining one of our serve teams, the Word of God should always lead to the work of God.

For the guys, our Man Up ministry is a great place to dive into the Word with other men who are trying to lead their families and honor God in everything they do. It’s authentic, it’s raw, and it’s where real growth happens.
