Many of us want to grow spiritually, but when we open the Bible, it can feel a bit overwhelming. With 66 books, ancient history, and deep theology, where do you even start? If you’ve ever felt like you’re just "reading words" without really hearing God’s voice, this guide is for you.
As a Bible teaching church in Boise, we want to equip you with simple, practical tools to move from just reading to truly experiencing the Word of God. Here are five easy steps to help you study the Bible and transform your spiritual life right here in Idaho.
Step 1: Prepare Your Heart and Your Space
Spiritual growth starts with a little bit of intentionality. Think of your Bible study time as a morning hike in the Boise foothills: you wouldn't just jump out of the car and start sprinting uphill without your boots and a water bottle, right? You prepare for the journey.
First, pick a translation that speaks to you. For most of us at 1Love Christian Church, we recommend the NIV (New International Version) or ESV (English Standard Version). They strike a great balance between accuracy and readability. If you’re a beginner, don't worry about the heavy academic stuff yet: just find a version that helps the stories of Jesus come alive.
Next, find your "spot." Maybe it's a quiet corner in your living room, your favorite local coffee shop in downtown Boise, or a bench at Julia Davis Park. Having a consistent place helps your brain signal that "it’s time to focus."
Finally, start with a simple prayer. You don’t need fancy words. Just say, "God, I’m here. Open my heart to what You want to show me today." This one-minute preparation shifts your mindset from "checking a box" to "meeting a Friend."
Step 2: Use the S.O.A.P. Method for Clarity
At 1Love Christian Church, we love simplicity. One of the best ways to keep your study focused is the SOAP method. It’s an acronym that stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.
S – Scripture
Don't try to read three chapters at once. Start small. Pick a book of the Bible: like the Gospel of John or the Book of James: and read just one small section (5-10 verses). Then, choose one verse that really jumps out at you and write it down word-for-word in a journal. There’s something powerful about the physical act of writing that helps the truth sink in.
O – Observation
Now, look closely at what you just wrote. Ask yourself: What is actually happening here? Who is speaking? Are there any repeated words? For example, if you see the word "remain" five times in one passage, God is probably trying to tell you something about staying close to Him! Observation isn't about deep secrets; it’s just about noticing what’s right in front of you.
Step 3: Apply it to Your Life in the Treasure Valley
The goal of Treasure Valley Christian worship and study isn't just to fill our heads with facts; it’s to change how we live on Monday morning. This is the "A" in our SOAP method: Application.
Ask yourself: "How does this verse change my day today?"
- Does it challenge how I talk to my coworkers?
- Does it give me peace about a stressful situation at home?
- Does it prompt me to reach out and help a neighbor?
If the verse is about God’s provision, maybe your application is to stop worrying about your budget for thirty minutes and instead thank God for what you do have. Make it specific. Instead of saying "I will be nicer," try "I will specifically encourage my spouse when they get home from work today."
Step 4: Join a Community of Learners
Studying the Bible alone is great, but we weren't meant to do life (or faith) in isolation. We are a small, tight-knit community, and we believe we grow faster when we grow together. Every Sunday morning at 9:30 AM, we host an In-Depth Bible Study led by Dale Cornett. Dale is a retired Boise Bible College professor with decades of wisdom, yet he makes the scriptures incredibly accessible. It’s a group-led discussion where you can ask questions, share your own "Observations," and learn from others who are on the same journey. It’s the perfect way to "warm up" before our main worship service.
Step 5: Stay Consistent and Find Accountability
The secret to spiritual growth isn't doing something massive once a month; it's doing something small every day. Consistency beats intensity every time. Even if you only have 10 minutes, give those 10 minutes to God.
For the men in our congregation, we have a specific way to stay sharp and consistent: the Man Up Men’s Ministry.
Man Up is all about "Practical Faith for Real Life." It’s a space where men can be real about their struggles, study the Word together, and hold each other accountable to being the leaders, fathers, and friends God called them to be. We meet regularly to dive into the tough questions and support one another in the unique challenges men face today.
