But let’s be real for a second, how often do you finish your morning Bible study feeling more like you just checked off a chore than like you actually met with the Creator of the universe?
We’ve all been there. You read a chapter, your mind wanders to your 9:00 AM meeting, and by the time you close your Bible, you can’t even remember what the first verse was about. If your spiritual growth feels a bit stalled, it might not be your heart, it might just be your habits.
As a Bible teaching church in Boise, we want to help you move beyond just "reading" and into "living" the Word. Here are seven common mistakes you might be making with your morning study and some simple, casual ways to fix them.
1. Treating It Like a To-Do List
The biggest mistake we make is treating our Bible study like a grocery list or a work task. We wake up, grab our coffee, and think, "Okay, I need to get through three chapters of Romans today." We focus so much on the completion that we miss the connection.
The Fix: Shift your mindset from information to intimacy. Instead of asking "How much can I get through?", ask "How much can get through to me?" Sometimes, slowly meditating on just three verses is more powerful for your soul than racing through three chapters. 2. The "Verse Hunting" Problem
We’ve all done it: we open the Bible to a random page, point our finger at a verse, and hope for a magical word of encouragement. While God can certainly speak through any verse, reading the Bible in "snippets" is like watching only the middle five minutes of a movie. You’ll be confused, and you’ll probably misinterpret the ending.
The Fix: Read in context. The Bible is a grand story of redemption. If you’re reading a letter from Paul, read the whole chapter to see who he’s talking to and why. The Fix: Start with a "Breath Prayer." Before you even open the cover, take thirty seconds to sit in silence. Ask, "Lord, open my eyes to see something beautiful about You today." This simple act shifts the focus from your effort to His grace. It turns a study session into a conversation.
4. The "Me-First" Lens
If your first question after reading a passage is always "What does this mean for me?", you’re missing the point. The Bible is primarily a book about God: His character, His holiness, and His plan for the world. When we make it all about us, we end up with a very small view of a very big God.
The Fix: Look for God first. Every time you read, try to find one thing the passage tells you about God’s character. Is He faithful? Is He just? Is He patient? The Fix: The "Bible First" Rule. Try reading the Scripture passage before you read the commentary or the devotional. Let the Word speak to you directly first. 6. Studying in Total Isolation
Personal study is vital, but the Christian life was never meant to be a solo sport. If you only ever study by yourself, you only ever have your own perspective. You miss out on the wisdom, questions, and insights of brothers and sisters who might see something you missed.

The Fix: The "One Thing" Challenge. At the end of your study, write down one specific thing you will do differently today because of what you read. Not a vague goal like "be nicer," but something concrete like "I will call my sister and apologize for being short with her yesterday."
