If you’ve driven through Boise lately, you’ve probably seen them: massive church buildings with multi-story parking garages, high-tech light shows, and enough seating to fill a stadium. It’s easy to look at those "mega-churches" and wonder if the era of the small, local church is over.
Are small churches dead?
The short answer is a resounding no. In fact, for many people in our community, the move toward "smaller" is actually a move toward something much deeper. At 1Love Church, we’ve intentionally kept things small: around 50 to 70 members: because we believe there’s something sacred about a space where you aren’t just a face in a crowd.
In a world that feels increasingly loud and anonymous, people are craving a place where they can be seen, known, and loved. Here is why the tight-knit community at 1Love is not just surviving, but thriving.
1. The Power of Being "Known by Name"
In a large congregation, it’s easy to slip in and out of a service without ever speaking to a soul. You might get a high-quality production, but you often walk away feeling just as lonely as when you arrived.
At a small church like 1Love, that anonymity doesn't exist. When you walk through our doors, people actually notice you’re there. And if you’re missing next week? People notice that, too. There is a deep, psychological comfort in being "known by name." It’s the difference between being a spectator and being a family member.
When our Leadership Advisor, Jon Beasley, talks about the vision for 1Love, it always comes back to connection. We aren't looking to build an audience; we’re looking to build a community. In a small setting, your joys are shared, and your burdens are lightened because there are real people: not just programs: walking alongside you.

2. Grace Over Perfection: The 1Love Philosophy
One of the biggest hurdles people face when looking for a church home is the pressure to "have it all together." We’ve all felt it: the need to put on our best clothes and our best "Christian face" before stepping into a sanctuary.
At 1Love, our motto is Grace Over Perfection.
Because we are a small group, we can't hide our messiness. We know each other’s struggles, and that honesty creates an environment where you don't have to be perfect to belong. Whether you’re dealing with a difficult season in your marriage, struggling with your mental health, or just having a rough week, you’ll find a group of people who are "not perfect, just willing."
This philosophy is baked into everything we do, from our Sunday Services to our midweek gatherings. We believe that God meets us exactly where we are, so we should meet each other there, too.

3. Deeper Spiritual Growth (Beyond the Big Show)
There is a common misconception that "bigger" means "better" when it comes to spiritual resources. While large churches have amazing bands and professional speakers, research actually shows that real spiritual transformation happens best in smaller, intimate settings.
Why? Because growth requires vulnerability.
In a small church, you have the opportunity to ask questions. You can participate in discussions rather than just listening to a lecture. In our Wednesday Night ReCharge groups or our Saturday "Man Up" events, the focus isn't on a polished performance. It’s about diving into the Word together and figuring out how it actually applies to our lives in Boise today.
When you are part of a small congregation, you also get more direct access to leadership. You can sit down with Pastor Daro or chat with our team after service. This kind of mentorship is hard to find when a pastor is managing thousands of people, but in a community of 60, it’s just part of the Sunday routine.
4. Authentic Worship in a Cozy Setting
There is a specific kind of beauty in a room where 50 people are singing together. It’s not about the acoustics or the smoke machines; it’s about the collective heart of the people.
At 1Love, our worship is simple and heartfelt. We often use acoustic instruments, and the focus is on the lyrics and the presence of God. It’s intimate. It’s real. It feels more like a living room gathering than a concert. For many who have been "burned" by the high-pressure environment of larger institutions, this stripped-back approach to faith is a breath of fresh air. It allows for a level of focus and peace that can be hard to find in a busier setting.

5. Support That Actually Shows Up
In a mega-church, "community support" often looks like a referral to a professional counselor or an automated email. In a small church, support looks like a casserole on your doorstep when you’re sick. It looks like a phone call on a Tuesday just to see how you’re doing. It looks like a group of friends showing up to help you move.
Because we are tight-knit, we can be agile. We can see a need in our congregation or our local Boise neighborhood and meet it immediately. We don't have to go through five layers of committee approval to help a neighbor in need. That’s the "1Love" way: loving our neighbors as ourselves in very practical, local ways.
6. A Place for Your Whole Family
Finding a church home can be intimidating for families. You worry about your kids fitting in or whether there’s a place for you to truly belong. Because our group is small, your kids aren't just another number in a massive children's ministry. They are part of the family. They grow up with "aunts and uncles" in the faith who know their names and cheer them on.
We believe that faith is a family journey. Whether you’re joining us for a Baptism Sunday or just a regular morning service, there’s a seat at the table for everyone: from the youngest to the oldest.

Conclusion: You’re Invited Home
So, are small churches dead? Far from it. They are the heartbeat of the community.
If you’ve been looking for a place where you can truly be yourself, where you can grow spiritually without the pressure of perfection, and where people will actually know your name, we’d love to meet you.
We aren't a mega-church, and we don't try to be. We are a small, local group of people trying our best to love God and love Boise. Whether you’ve been a Christian your whole life or you’re just starting to ask questions, you are welcome here.
Join us this Sunday at 10:00 AM.
Come as you are. We’ll have the coffee ready.
