In this guide, we’re going to walk through how to build a daily morning devotion from scratch. We’ll talk about the tools you need, the best place to start, and a simple method called SOAP that takes the guesswork out of your study time.
Why a Morning Devotion Matters
Why the morning? While you can talk to God at any time (and you should!), there is something special about giving Him your first thoughts. Before the emails start rolling in, before the kids need breakfast, and before the noise of the day takes over, you have a chance to ground yourself in truth.
Starting your day with Scripture helps you:
- Gain Perspective: It reminds you that God is in control, no matter what your to-do list looks like.
- Find Peace: It’s hard to feel anxious when you’ve just spent time reading about God’s promises.

Preparing Your Space and Heart

Find a place where you feel comfortable and focused. It could be a specific chair in your living room, your kitchen table with a fresh cup of coffee, or even a quiet corner of a local park if the Idaho weather is behaving. The goal is consistency.
2. Gather Your Tools
You don’t need much, but having these ready is key:
- A Physical Bible: While phone apps are great, a physical Bible helps reduce distractions (no notifications!).
- A Journal and Pen: Writing things down helps you process what God is saying.
- A Plan: Know which book of the Bible you are going to read next.
3. Set a Realistic Time
If you aren't a morning person, don't try to start with an hour-long study. Start with 15 minutes. God cares more about the sincerity of your heart than the number of minutes on the clock.

S – Scripture

O – Observation
Now, look at the verses you just wrote. Ask yourself a few simple questions:
- What is happening here?
- Who is speaking, and who are they talking to?
- What does this tell me about God’s character?
Write down a couple of bullet points about what you notice. Don’t worry about sounding "theological": just be honest about what you see.
A – Application
This is the most important part. Ask: "How does this apply to my life right now?" Maybe the verse is about forgiveness, and you realize you’ve been holding a grudge against a coworker. Or maybe it’s about God’s provision, and you need to trust Him with your finances. Write down one practical thing you can do today based on what you read.
P – Prayer
Finally, turn your thoughts into a conversation with God. Thank Him for what He showed you, ask for help with the application you wrote down, and bring your daily needs to Him. You can even write this prayer out in your journal to help stay focused.
