Struggling with Restless Nights? 3 Simple Evening Reflections for New Believers

Starting a new journey of faith is one of the most exciting things you’ll ever do. But let’s be honest: it can also be a bit overwhelming. If you’ve recently decided to follow Jesus, you’re likely navigating a lot of "new" things. New habits, new ways of thinking, and maybe even a new community here at 1Love Christian Church.

With all that growth and change, it’s not uncommon to find yourself lying awake at night. Your mind might be racing with questions about your new life, worries you haven't quite learned how to let go of yet, or just the general "noise" of a busy day in Boise. If you’re a new believer struggling with restless nights, you aren't alone. In fact, learning how to rest: both physically and spiritually: is a huge part of your growth.

At 1Love Christian Church, we believe that faith isn't just for Sunday mornings; it’s for the quiet, 2:00 AM moments, too. Here are three simple evening reflections designed to help you quiet your mind, connect with God, and finally get the rest you need.

1. The "Gratitude Review": Shifting Your Focus

When we’re stressed, our brains naturally gravitate toward what went wrong or what we’re afraid might happen tomorrow. For new believers, this can sometimes look like worrying if you’re "doing it right" or feeling guilty about a mistake you made during the day.

The first reflection is simple: Look for the Light.

Before you close your eyes, take five minutes to replay your day like a movie. Instead of looking for the bloopers, look for the moments where God showed up. Did a coworker say something encouraging? Did you see a beautiful sunset over the Boise foothills? Did you feel a sense of peace during a difficult conversation?

By naming 3–5 specific things you’re grateful for, you’re practicing a key part of Christian discipleship in Boise: recognizing God’s presence in your everyday life. Gratitude has a way of shrinking our giants. When we focus on how big God’s goodness is, our problems start to feel a lot more manageable.

2. The "Surrender List": Casting Your Cares

One of the hardest things for any new believer to learn is that you no longer have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. There’s a beautiful verse in the Bible, 1 Peter 5:7, that says, "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

But how do you actually "cast" something? It sounds a bit abstract when you’re staring at the ceiling fan.

Try this: Imagine you have a physical backpack. Every worry you have: whether it’s about your job, your family, or your new faith walk: is a heavy rock in that pack. In your mind (or even out loud), name each worry and "hand" it to Jesus.

You might say, "Lord, I’m worried about my meeting tomorrow. I’m giving that to You. I’m worried about my kids. I’m giving them to You."

If you’re the type of person who needs to do something physical, keep a small notebook by your bed. Write down the things keeping you awake, then literally close the book and tell God, "You’ve got this tonight. I’m going to sleep." This is a core part of the prayer and encouragement we practice here at 1Love Christian Church. We aren't meant to be "perfect" or "together"; we’re meant to be dependent on Him.

3. The "Scripture Soak": Resting in a Promise

Sometimes the silence of the night feels loud. When your own thoughts are shouting, the best thing you can do is let God’s words speak louder.

Pick one short verse to repeat slowly as you breathe. You don’t need to study it or analyze it: just "soak" in it. A great one for restless nights is Psalm 4:8: "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."

As you inhale, think: In peace I will lie down and sleep.
As you exhale, think: You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

This isn't a magic trick; it’s a way of centering your heart on the truth. As a new believers church in Boise, we love helping people find these "anchor verses" that keep them steady when life feels like a storm. If you’re looking for more ways to dive into the Word, our Sunday morning Bible Study at 9:30 AM is a great place to start. It’s casual, low-pressure, and perfect for asking those "beginner" questions you might be afraid to ask elsewhere.

Growing Together in Boise

If you’re looking for a place to grow and find support, 1Love Christian Church is here for you. We are a small, tight-knit community of about 50–70 people who are all just trying to walk with Jesus as best as we can. We aren't a "mega-church" where you’ll get lost in the crowd. We’re a family where people actually know your name.

For the guys, we have our Man Up Men’s Ministry. It’s a place where we get real about the struggles of being a man, a father, a husband, and a follower of Christ in today’s world. It’s about building strength through vulnerability and community. If you’ve been feeling isolated in your faith, "Man Up" is a great way to find brothers who will have your back.

The Power of New Beginnings

Many of the people in our congregation have recently experienced baptism in Boise. Baptism is such a powerful symbol of "the old is gone, the new has come." It’s a public declaration that you’re starting fresh. If you haven't been baptized yet but feel like God is calling you to that next step, we would love to talk to you about it. There’s a certain kind of peace that comes from making that commitment: a peace that definitely helps you sleep better at night!
