Your Quick-Start Guide to Morning Bible Reading: Do This First

We’ve all been there. You wake up with the best intentions. You’re going to be that person who watches the sunrise with an open Bible and a peaceful heart. But then the alarm goes off, the kids start asking for breakfast, your phone pings with three "urgent" emails, and suddenly, it’s 9:00 AM and you’re just trying to survive the morning rush.

At 1Love Christian Church, we know that life in the Treasure Valley moves fast. Whether you’re commuting into downtown Boise or getting the family ready for school, finding that quiet moment with God can feel like a luxury you can’t afford. But here’s the truth: spiritual growth doesn't happen by accident, and it doesn't require you to be a monk living in a cave. It just takes a little bit of a plan.

If you’ve been wanting to dive deeper into Bible teaching church in Boise styles of learning but don't know where to start, this guide is for you. We’re going to break down how to start a morning Bible habit that actually sticks. And the secret? It actually starts the night before.

Step 1: The "Night Before" Strategy

If you wait until you’re bleary-eyed and searching for your glasses to decide to read the Bible, you’ve already lost half the battle. Decision fatigue is real. The most important thing you can do to ensure success tomorrow morning is to make three simple decisions tonight.

1. Pick a Specific Time

"Sometime in the morning" is a recipe for "never." Instead, anchor your Bible reading to a habit you already have. Maybe it’s 7:00 AM right after you start the coffee pot. Maybe it’s 6:30 AM before anyone else in the house is awake. Set a fixed appointment with God.

2. Pick a Specific Place

Environment matters. Find a spot in your home that feels peaceful. It might be a specific chair at the kitchen table, a corner of the couch, or even a desk in your home office. By choosing a spot, you’re telling your brain, "This is where we meet with the Lord."

3. Set the Stage

Don’t go hunting for your Bible in the morning. Put your Bible, a pen, and a notebook in your chosen spot tonight. If you use a Bible app, make sure your phone is charged and placed nearby (but maybe on "Do Not Disturb" mode so you aren't tempted by social media).

Step 2: Choose an Easy Starting Point

One of the biggest hurdles to reading the Bible is opening it to a random page and feeling totally lost. The Bible is a big book, and while every bit of it is valuable, some parts are easier to jump into than others when you’re just starting a habit.

At 1Love Christian Church, we love focusing on the life of Jesus. For a beginner or someone getting back into the swing of things, we recommend starting with one of the Gospels:

  • The Gospel of Mark: This is the shortest Gospel. It’s fast-paced and action-oriented. It’s perfect if you want to see the "highlights" of Jesus’ ministry and move quickly through the story.
  • The Gospel of John: This one is a bit more reflective. It’s beautiful and focuses deeply on the identity of Jesus as the Son of God.

If you’re looking for something more poetic or emotional, you can’t go wrong with the Psalms. Reading one Psalm a day is a great way to learn how to talk to God about your feelings, whether you're happy, tired, or stressed.

The goal here is to keep it small. Don’t try to read five chapters a day. Aim for one chapter or even half a chapter. That’s usually about 5 to 10 minutes of reading, which is totally doable for any Boise schedule. Step 3: A Simple 15-Minute Routine

You don't need an hour to have a meaningful time with God. If you have 15 minutes, you have enough time to grow. Here is a simple structure we recommend to our 1Love Christian Church family:

  1. Pray Briefly (1 minute): You don't need fancy words. Just say, "Lord, please open my eyes to what You want to show me today. Help me understand Your Word."
  2. Read Slowly (5–10 minutes): Read your chosen passage. If you find your mind wandering, try reading it out loud. It helps you stay focused on the text.
  3. Reflect (2–3 minutes): Grab that notebook you set out. Ask yourself three simple questions:
    • What does this say? (Summarize the main point.)
    • What does this tell me about God? (His character, His promises, His love.)
    • How can I live this today? (Is there a specific action or attitude change I need?)
  4. Pray in Response (1–2 minutes): Talk to God about what you just read. Thank Him for His promises or ask for help with the "how to live it" part.
  5. Carry One Verse (10 seconds): Pick one sentence or phrase that stuck out to you. Write it on a sticky note or put it in the "notes" section of your phone. Use it as a reminder throughout your day in the Treasure Valley.

Step 4: Your First 7-Day Plan

Ready to start? Let’s make it even easier. Here is a 7-day jumpstart using the Gospel of Mark. Mark is full of the kind of power and truth we talk about in our Boise sermons.

  • Day 1: Mark 1 (Jesus begins His ministry)
  • Day 2: Mark 2 (Jesus heals and eats with "sinners")
  • Day 3: Mark 3 (Choosing the disciples)
  • Day 4: Mark 4 (Parables of the kingdom)
  • Day 5: Mark 5 (Jesus’ power over sickness and death)
  • Day 6: Mark 6 (Jesus walks on water)
  • Day 7: Mark 7 (Clean hearts vs. religious traditions)

By the end of this week, you’ll have a much clearer picture of who Jesus is and how He wants to interact with your life. If you find yourself wanting more community during this journey, we invite you to join us on Sunday mornings. We start with Bible Study at 9:30 AM, which is a great place to ask questions, followed by Worship at 10:30 AM and the Sermon at 11:00 AM. You can learn more about our services at our Visit page.

Step 5: Grace Over Perfection

Here is the most important part of this guide: If you miss a day, don't quit.

Many people stop their Bible reading habit because they miss a Tuesday, feel guilty on Wednesday, and by Thursday they feel like a failure. At 1Love Christian Church, we believe in grace over perfection. God isn't checking a clipboard to see if you hit your 15 minutes every single day. He just wants to spend time with you.

If you miss a day, don't try to "catch up" by reading four chapters the next morning. That just makes it feel like homework. Simply pick up where you left off or start with today’s reading. The goal is consistency, not a perfect streak.

For the men in our community who are looking for extra accountability and strength in their walk, our Man Up Men’s Ministry is a fantastic resource. We meet on Saturday mornings to sharpen one another and dig into what it means to be a man of God in today's world.

Why This Matters for Boise and Beyond

We live in a beautiful place. Whether you’re hiking the foothills or enjoying the river, there’s no shortage of God’s general revelation in nature. But to truly know the heart of the Creator, we need His specific revelation: the Bible.

When you start your day with the Word, you aren't just "reading a book." You are aligning your heart with the Truth before the world has a chance to tell you who you should be. You’re finding a "Treasure Valley Christian worship" experience right in your own living room.

As a Bible teaching church in Boise, we are committed to helping you grow. If you’re ever struggling with a passage or just want someone to pray with you as you start this journey, reach out to our Prayer & Care team. We are here for you.
