Your Quick-Start Guide to Morning Prayer and Spiritual Growth: Do This First

We’ve all been there. The alarm goes off, and before your eyes are even fully open, your hand is already reaching for your phone. Within thirty seconds, you’re scrolling through emails, checking the news, or getting lost in social media. By the time you actually roll out of bed, your mind is already cluttered with the world’s noise, anxieties, and a "to-do" list that feels a mile long.

At 1Love Christian Church, we believe there’s a better way to start your day: a way that doesn't just manage your stress, but actually transforms your life from the inside out. If you’re looking for a Bible teaching church in Boise that prioritizes real, authentic connection with God, you know that spiritual growth doesn't happen by accident. It starts with an intentional "first" in your morning.

This guide is designed to help you reclaim your mornings and kickstart your spiritual growth. Whether you’re a lifelong believer or someone just starting to explore Treasure Valley Christian worship, these simple steps will help you connect with the Creator before the world starts demanding your attention.

Why the Morning Matters

You might be thinking, "Penny, I’m just not a morning person." We hear you! But there is something uniquely powerful about the early hours. Throughout the Scriptures, we see that the morning was a sacred time for those who sought God. Even Jesus, in the midst of a busy ministry, "rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed" (Mark 1:35).

Setting aside time first thing in the morning isn't about legalism or checking a box; it’s about setting the "spiritual thermostat" for your day. Instead of reacting to the world, you are responding to God. When you seek Him first, you’ll find that the challenges of the day: whether they happen at work in downtown Boise or at home with the kids: feel much more manageable because you aren't carrying them alone.

Step 1: The "No Phone" Zone

The biggest obstacle to morning prayer is the little rectangle in your pocket. Our first practical tip for spiritual growth is simple: Do not touch your phone until you have touched your Bible.

Try charging your phone in another room or across the house. This forces you to get out of bed without immediately entering the digital world. Instead of waking up to "notifications," you’re waking up to the "Good News." This small shift creates a "sacred space" in your mind, allowing you to hear the still, small voice of God before the loud voices of the internet take over.

Step 2: The 5-Minute Foundation

If the idea of an hour-long prayer session feels overwhelming, start small. We’re talking five minutes. Consistency is much more important than duration when you’re building a new habit. Here is a simple, three-part framework to get you started:

1. Breathe and Acknowledge (1 Minute)

Before you even start "asking" for things, just sit in silence. Acknowledge that God is present with you right now. Take a deep breath and say a simple prayer like, "Lord, thank You for this new day. I give this time and this day to You."

2. Read One Chapter (3 Minutes)

Don't worry about reading through the whole Bible in a month. Pick one book: we recommend starting with the Gospel of John or the Book of James: and read just one chapter or even half a chapter. If you're looking for deep Boise sermons or study material to go along with your reading, we invite you to check out our Sermon Archive to see how we break down the Word together.

3. Respond in Prayer (1 Minute)

Use what you just read to fuel your prayer. If you read about God’s peace, ask Him for peace in your specific situation. If you read about forgiveness, ask for help to forgive someone. This keeps your prayers from becoming repetitive and helps you actually apply the Bible to your real life.

Step 3: Use the ACTS Model

If you find yourself stuck on what to say when you pray, the ACTS model is a classic tool that works wonders:

  • A – Adoration: Tell God how great He is. Praise Him for His character: His love, His power, His kindness.
  • C – Confession: Be honest about where you’ve messed up. Getting the "junk" out of the way clears the path for a closer relationship with Jesus.
  • T – Thanksgiving: What are you grateful for today? List three specific things. Gratitude is a powerful weapon against anxiety.
  • S – Supplication: This is a fancy word for "asking." Bring your needs and the needs of others to God.

Deepening the Habit: Community is Key

While personal prayer is vital, spiritual growth is never meant to be a solo sport. At 1Love Christian Church, we are a small, tight-knit community of about 50 to 70 people. We know each other's names, and we carry each other's burdens. If you want to take your morning study to the next level, you need to be in the Word with others.

We offer an incredible In-Depth Bible Study led by Dale Cornett, a retired professor from Boise Bible College. This isn't just a lecture; it's a place where you can ask questions, dive deep into the Greek and Hebrew contexts, and grow alongside fellow believers.

This study happens every Sunday morning before our main service. It’s the perfect way to "prime the pump" for worship and ensure you’re getting the most out of your Sunday morning.

For the Men: Man Up!

We also know that men often face unique challenges in staying consistent with their spiritual lives. That’s why we have our Man Up Men’s Ministry. It’s a dedicated space for the guys of the Treasure Valley to get together, eat some good food, and encourage one another to be the leaders, husbands, and fathers God called them to be.

Whether you’re a seasoned prayer warrior or you’ve never opened a Bible in your life, you are welcome here. We believe that when men step up and "man up" in their faith, it changes families and it changes our city.

Bring the Family into Worship

Morning prayer is the foundation, but the highlight of our week is when the whole church family gathers for Treasure Valley Christian worship. Our services are intimate and focused on the presence of God. We don't do the "big show" style: instead, we focus on authentic worship and practical teaching that you can actually use on Monday morning.
